Questions about baton twirling?

I recently posted a question asking if i could start a new sport. Someone suggested baton twirling. So I looked up some videos and went online. i saw some videos and baton twirling is absolutely GORGEOUS! i think it is absoluelty beautiful. i would LOVE to try it but i’m not very athletic. I swam for 10 years but i’m still not the fastest. i’m not in shape at all and breathe hard when i walk up steps. but i’m only 15. i’m 115 pounds but not skinny. i’m not overly fat either and i’d really like to tone up and become more flexible. i can’t even touch my toes. i don’t even come close to touching my toes. i’m not tall and have no previous dance or gymnastics training. but i’d really like to try baton twiriling. i want to take it seriouslybut i also really want it to be fun and i REALLY want it to be something i REALLY enjoy. but i don’t want to do competitions. at least not right away. and is it possible to start off with people my own age that are just starting baton twirling also? i really want it to help me physically and mentally but the main thing is that i really want to enjoy it. Also, I’m afraid of telling my parents that I would like to do something like this mostly because I think she will laugh at me and say that it’s not a good idea. we don’t have many unique sports around us, only the basic schools sports (softball, wrestling, football, baseball, cheerleading, and basketball). There are other options….maybe. But it would invloeve driving somewhere from 30 minutes to an hour and my mom doesnt wann drive everyday for an hour and back. and is baton twirling a year round sport? anything on baton twirling would be wonderful.

Hey I hope this is enough for you!

Baton twirling is an activity involving the manipulation of a metal rod and the human body to a coordinated routine and is similar to rhythmic gymnastics or color guard (flag spinning). Twirling combines dance and gymnastics while manipulating a single baton or multiple batons. It is primarily performed with the accompaniment of music. Fundamental characteristics of the sport include the handling of the baton to create visual images, pictures, and patterns executed with dexterity both close in and around the body and the release of the baton into the air. The discipline requires the simultaneous blending of these fundamental characteristics, utilizing time and space to display both technical merit and artistic expression.

Baton twirling requires skillful coordination and extraordinary control of the human body. Additionally it requires a great amount of flexibility in order to properly execute baton, dance, and gymnastics elements. Choreography for baton twirling is designed to promote expression of the body through dance and movement to create a demonstration of strength, flexibility, physical fitness, beauty, aesthetics, and harmony in coordination with the manipulation of the baton.[1]

Hope I helped!
