The University of Akron softballteamcan boast of success both on and off the field. In 2008 its players received highly-touted academic honors, and it posted a strong conference finish. The student-athletes of the womens softball team also made an outstanding commitment through service to the University Park neighborhood to help meet critical needs of the community, focusing particularly on serving the neighborhoods youth. In 2008-09, players conducted sports clinics at both Mason and Leggett Elementary Schools creating a program that featured softball drills, skill sessions and fun games for the students. This program was designed to not only teach the younger students the skills of the sport, but also to give the student-athletes an opportunity to develop mentoring and leadership skills. Members of the softball team also participated in the Zippys Readers program, where players read to Mason and Leggett students along with UA’s famous mascot, Zippy. In addition, the team has raised money for and given volunteer hours to a number of city-wide and regional programs and organizations, including UAs Make a Difference Day, Summit County Board of MRDD, Junior Achievement, Akron Juvenile Detention Center and the Memory Walk for Alzheimers.
