When you have a runner on, you’re going to line up a couple steps in front of first. Slide back to cover first with your left foot, keeping an open glove to the catcher.

I’m sure there is a Summer or Minor League game close to your home. Go and watch the techniques of the first basemen. Watch for Footwork and Hand motions.
