Why are Softball and Baseball no longer Olympic sports?

Is true that they are trying to kick basketball out too?

Oddly for opposite reasons.

In Softball the USA women’s team has traditionally dominated so much that it is seen by some as grossly unfair. They have had some good games but few can consistently compete against them.

In Baseball, The USA does not send in the best team the country could field. Not to say these guys are not good, but many would like to see the professionals be given time off from their club commitments to compete in the Olympics.

Perhaps if pro baseball sponsors construction of facilities and more little league teams around the world the team sport will grow in popularity.

Not because USA won every game. They lost both baseball and softball this year. But because to be an Olympic sport, it has to be played in a significant number of countries (> 35), softball and baseball simply are not that popular outside a few select countries.

And nope, basketball is in no such danger.

Wrong, baseball is out because the olympics wants to see big names on the roster, not because only a few play. if that was the case then a good portion of the "sports" should’ve been taken out

The real answer is that to be an Olympic sport you need to sign up to the IOC anti doping policy that says you must be suspended for 2 years if you are caught cheating and the people in charge of baseball would not agree as potential MLB players would have to sit out for two years if they got caught using drugs. Could you imagine a Dice-K style player getting a two year ban or a MLB team actually banning him
