I’ve been doing kendo since last July, and things have been working out relatively well. But then my friend who I car pooled with doesn’t want to do kendo anymore.(Kendo’s across town) And I have been waiting since December to get back into it because they keep say,"You can do it next month," "Oh, next month for sure. I promise," and now they’re saying no again after they promised me again that they would take me this February. I think they were against it from the start but they were saying that they, "Really want me to do it but it’s just so gosh darn far," its only about 30 mins. away. I think that they believe that my other sport, softball, is more important(I love them both equally) and how my brother will, "suffer" from my participation in kendo. They’re "promising again for March (when all of my big tests are happening) but I just don’t think they’ll do it. Any tips?
There aren’t any busses where i live yet.
Parents often think that the decisions that they make are the best for their children, and will do what is right for them. However, time and time again, parents have been shown wrong in this regards. So, while they might think that keeping you from Kendo is the right thing, for you, you need to show them that it isn’t.
You have not mentioned if you have made it into wearing bogu yet or not, and I think that will be a big milestone for you to show how serious you are about Kendo. Generally, those who make it to bogu, and then train in it, will continue some way or another. Kendo is a life long journey, not something like, say, tennis, where at the age of 30, you are considered past your prime.
Like the previous answers, there must be alternative modes of transport available. If you do not have the ability to drive yourself, then pushbikes may be possible (we have a 60+ year old gentleman in our club who rides to training on a pushbike with his bogu and shinai tied onto his bike), or car-pooling too is an option. If you have the funds, and are feeling a little rebellious, you could even take slightly more drastic measures of a taxi, and then see how your parents like the idea of spending so much money to go to training.
Determination, preserverence, committment. Show them to your parents, and I hope that they will soften their decision if they realise exactly how much effort YOU are willing to go to.
I don’t see how your brother will suffer from your participation. He can train Kendo too if he is interested, and as a martial artform, it will provide physical exercise and development, mental strength, and also discipline, respect, compassion, patience and humbleness.
My parents believe that I shouldn’t give up my Kendo, even when work takes me interstate on a weekly regular basis, because of what Kendo holds in value for anyone that practices it. As I mentioned before, it is something you will do for life, you will never forget how to do Kendo once you get into it far enough. I took a two year break due to other commitments, then came back and passed my grading with two weeks training.
I know people in our club that travel 2hrs on public transport to train with us. It takes me 40minutes by car or an hour by public transport also. People who are dedicated will always find a way.
I wish you luck in changing your parents’ opinions.
As for March, if they offer to take you during your big tests, go. Be prepared well enough for your exams, but take the time to train also, it will provide balance. If you show them you can get your study and extra-curricular together, they then have even less reason to object.
People like me have a lot of questions about the sport of softball.
I know there is a category for baseball but does any know why softball is not a category?
Categories are determined by how much activity there is in a specific area. If enough questions ABOUT softball were posted, over time, YA staff would probably add it. Since they have not, I would assume that there simply is not enough interest.
You can SUGGEST to staff that you would like it to be included, on the Suggestion Board on the ABOUT tab over the green bar. They have a separate place there just for suggesting new categories.
it seems like other women sports have much better looking people than womens basketball. dont tell me that its because they sweat and all that jazz because so does the other women who play different sports. tennis has good looking women, soccer has good looking women, softball has good looking women, and the list goes on. but when it comes to basketball, the women are just so unattractive. what’s up with that?
More attractive women in the WNBA are usually less athletic as the ones that are unattractive. That is the way I like it. Although if you’re talking about attractive, maybe Sue Bird or Candace Parker will help.
I’m writing this for college applications and also for APenglish summer homework. I’m mainly doing it for the homework assignment right now. We had to choose a question and the essay has to be reflective. My question is ‘Have you ever struggled for something and failed? How did you respond? Have you experienced a feeling of disappointment and dissatisfaction of yourself?’ Here’s my essay:
All of high school I’ve felt that I have to have perfect grades and be this perfect person, who plays sports and is in all the clubs and does community service and gets a 36 on their act and never sleeps and still manages to be a happy person all the time. And I tried my best to fit in to this role, hoping that in the end I would be keeper of some good experiences and would be able to be a successful graduate and move on to a choice college and make everyone happy. Along the way I learned that it was impossible for me to do all of these things, because that’s just not who I was.
I’m smart and get pretty good grades, but I’m the kind of person that when I don’t understand something, I need to put in a lot of extra time to get it. And I did, as much as I could. I would stay after for math on days that I could and come in before school and study for it in my other classes, but I still couldn’t get my grades where I wanted them to be. When I look back at my C’s and B’s I feel disappointed in myself, because I know I could’ve done better. It just isn’t completely possible for me while playing sports. I always played sports; softball, basketball (for a year), and golf. I didn’t always think it was worth it. I’m not saying that I didn’t have a lot of fun playing them, because I did. And you learn a lot of life skills from sports. But sometimes I just felt like I didn’t like the sport but I wanted to play it to seem like that person who plays all the sports. I ended up only playing basketball a year, but believe me even though I hated it, I almost just kept playing. I always felt like I had to play sports, as to why, I’m not sure. It even seemed more important to me than grades for a while. I knew grades should come first, but a lot of times sports got in the way and grades weren’t a priority. As for being in school clubs, it didn’t seem to me that a lot many people were actually ‘in them’.There’s the people who are die-hard fanatics for key club or book club, and there’s the people who show up a couple times to say that they’re in it. They don’t actually want to devote their little free time to a club. Well I can’t half-do something. I have to go to every practice or every meeting or else I don’t feel like I should be involved. So I never ended up doing many clubs, but all during high school I just felt like I should do more, because what I did wasn’t good enough. I was in National Honors Society. I had to put a lot of time into it, as you have to write an essay and get inducted, then earn 10 hours of community service each trimester. It’s hard to do with sports and school but it was the one thing I made sure I did other than those.
Throughout high school I realized there is no ‘perfect student’.There’s just a lot of people trying. And a lot of people who may seem like they are perfect, but they’re not. What you have to do is choose the things you want to do, and try your best with them. I know now that I can do anything I set my mind to, but not everything. And I think I’ve learned to be happy with that, and to stop feeling like what I do is never good enough. I’m excited to go on to a university with this knowledge and although high school was fun, I’m expecting that college will be way more enjoyable and rewarding.
Yes, thanks. I ‘amma copy it.
My mom says that I have to do a sport , I really don’t know how to do anything for real . Softball seems easier than any other sports . So if I’m just starting out , does it seem a little too late ? Or should I try something else ? ? ?
It’s always important that you like what you’re doing before entering into it. You wont be able to improve or learn anything if your heart is not into the activity. If you really like softball it’s not too late to try-out. It’s just important that you learn all the skill necessary for softball. You must know how to catch, throw, field, bat and base run. Then you must know the several positions and their roles and lastly you must know the different game situations and know what to do when the ball is going your direction.
Does anyone agree that softball is a fun sport to play.
yep! I’ve played for 12 years and hope to continue the rest of high school and through college
there too? I know its a long shot but hey gotta dream big. Maybe a double degree in arts and journalism do they have that over there, and how do i get recognized? I’m quite good, looking for Australian selection in a few years.
It might be tough since you live so far away, but something you could do is contact their coach or athletic director and fill out a recruitment form. Put in all your stats ( if they’re good) and awards you have won. It would also be great if you sent them a video of you playing softball so they could see how good you are. Just keep in touch with the coach and hopefully you will get the scholarship you want.
I was just wondering. I really want the bat.
Go to their website and/or visit a store. It’s more likely to be in the bigger ones.
Hello!
My favorite sport is softball but I don’t have the opportunity to play it because I live in Wyoming, the only of the 50 states that doesn’t have fastpitch softball as a high school sport.
I’ll be a junior this fall and I’ve quit playing all sports. I’m only involved in student council. I’m wondering if I should make it my goal during the next two years to work on getting the Wyoming High School Activities Association to admit softball as a sport or if I should just forget it.
The first excuse was because the weather. If they can play in Montana, Alaska, Washington, etc, we can, too. The next was that there is an equal number of girls’ sports to boys’ (which it has to be by federal law) because wrestling is considered a girl’s sport even though hardly any girls participate.
I’m so passionate about softball. It used to be my dream not to even play college softball but to play HIGH SCHOOL softball. I’ve seriously considered moving out of state. I feel really lost at school because I don’t have anything to enjoy/excell at, especially since I’ve stopped playing sports. I think I could use my platform on student council to communicate with schools among the state and then connect with the activities association.
What do you think? Is this completely unrealistic or achievable? But needless to say if I were to decide to do this, I would give it my everything until I felt successful.
I think that is a great idea and goal. I also enjoy playing softball and I was very disappointed that the new school I will be going to ( I just moved) did not have a softball team. I think to accomplish this goal you would definitely need to get more people on board with you. What fun would it be if there was only one or two teams in the whole state? Therefore, I would recommend creating a facebook page or something else to promote this. Also, be prepared for any excuses that the Activities Association may come up with like "I do not believe we could find enough coaches." or " I don’t think the schools could afford the facilities and equipment right now".
But anyways.. good luck! I think the world would be a better place with more people like you around!
