    I don’t know for certain, but I think it’s because it’s a sport that involves girls/women more than men. Sports seems to be very big in small towns here, and girl’s basketball, volleyball, track, and softball draw in lots of people. Even fifth grade girls basketball is well-supported by families.

    Softball just happens to be the springtime girl’s sport, along with track.
