of getting into Wake Forest?

At the moment I am a sophomore, and I really really like Wake.

My current resume is:

3.9 GPA (non-weighted)
Sport (softball, so far only JV)
Community Service (over 100 hours so far)
Spanish Club
School newspaper (which is 5th in the nation)
1740 PSAT (I took it freshman year… I intend on getting a MUCH better score on the SAT when I take it)

In the next few years I intend on taking 9 AP classes, and receiving at least a B or better in all of them. I also plan on getting a 1900-2000 on the SAT. By senior year I will likely have an editorship on my newspaper and become president of the Spanish club for leadership, and make varsity softball (though I don’t intend on playing the sport in college.) I’m also a very good writer, so I plan on writing a great essay.

I know I’m thinking about college sort of early, but I’m a big planner. If you can help me out with any words of advice or an honest opinion on my chances that would be great, thanks!

Wake Forest is a very difficult school for admission, but you are doing very well at this point. Keep ot up and you have a chance for Wake Forest./

Im 15 almost 16, i want to start boxing. I am SO out of shape though. I want to know how I can start. And will i like die with the work out? lol. I only play one sport.. Softball. And thats really all ive ever played… and i started last year… How do i do this? and is it hard? please help!

Hi there,

Here to help, so here it goes…

Monday: 3-5 mile jog.
Tuesday: Upper body work – Weights, push ups, arm endurance.
Wednesday: Half mile swim, build to mile. (64 Lengths of 25M Pool = 1 mile)
Thursday: Rest
Friday: Legs, core/abs – Dips(Squats), crunches, leg lifts, Flexability, endurance etc..
Saturday: Sprints – 30m sprint – 60m Jog, repeat about 10-12 times and build to 16.
Sunday: Rest

Work on building all your attributes and research exercises online.. don’t expect to build muscle from press ups or dips etc.. Research online.

Follow the program for 6-8 weeks before starting classes, learn more about boxing and purchase equipment if you wish.

Once you join.. talk to your trainer about how you can improve your boxing and fitness,
A boxer typically trains on:
Muscle Fibers – Repetitive actions such as straight punches for round after round.
Power Training – Throwing huge shots on the bag, Jumping up steps, Fast weight training.. All in short bursts with little oxygen.
Endurance – Banging out press up to burpee to sprints.. Teaching their bodies to keep going, going, going!
Fitness – Training in short bursts, having time to recover as best as possible and go again, e.g Sprints.
Conditioning – Taking shots/medicine balls to the body and preparing your body for punishment.
Co-ordination – Skipping and footwork, even when your knackered they gotta bang it out.
Cardio – Plenty of it, running and swimming and more.. Improving your heart and body efficiency.
Over conditioning – Training 13 rounds before a 12 round fight, punching with weights and survival sparing..

It is hard going in a class… Join and train with a friend.. this will give you a bit of a competitive edge and raise your confidence.

I cant even touch my toes. i don’t want to do a regular sport like tennis, softball, basketball, soccer, or volleyball. I would love to do something like gymnastics or rhythmic gymnastics. i really love watching rhythmic gymnastics and i think it is a really beautiful sport. But i am afraid that i am too old and not the right body type: not flexible, short, but 115 pounds. im not skinny but i only weigh 115 pounds but i would like to start a sport that is good for me physically and mentally. I would like to become more flexible and i would like to be able to have nice physique. oh, and i don’t have the best posture either. But i REALLY want to try out something new.

Fencing is great for posture, it also really improves your reflexes and endurance
It has actually been proven to make you a better problem solver too

I recently posted a question asking if i could start a new sport. Someone suggested baton twirling. So I looked up some videos and went online. i saw some videos and baton twirling is absolutely GORGEOUS! i think it is absoluelty beautiful. i would LOVE to try it but i’m not very athletic. I swam for 10 years but i’m still not the fastest. i’m not in shape at all and breathe hard when i walk up steps. but i’m only 15. i’m 115 pounds but not skinny. i’m not overly fat either and i’d really like to tone up and become more flexible. i can’t even touch my toes. i don’t even come close to touching my toes. i’m not tall and have no previous dance or gymnastics training. but i’d really like to try baton twiriling. i want to take it seriouslybut i also really want it to be fun and i REALLY want it to be something i REALLY enjoy. but i don’t want to do competitions. at least not right away. and is it possible to start off with people my own age that are just starting baton twirling also? i really want it to help me physically and mentally but the main thing is that i really want to enjoy it. Also, I’m afraid of telling my parents that I would like to do something like this mostly because I think she will laugh at me and say that it’s not a good idea. we don’t have many unique sports around us, only the basic schools sports (softball, wrestling, football, baseball, cheerleading, and basketball). There are other options….maybe. But it would invloeve driving somewhere from 30 minutes to an hour and my mom doesnt wann drive everyday for an hour and back. and is baton twirling a year round sport? anything on baton twirling would be wonderful.

Hey I hope this is enough for you!

Baton twirling is an activity involving the manipulation of a metal rod and the human body to a coordinated routine and is similar to rhythmic gymnastics or color guard (flag spinning). Twirling combines dance and gymnastics while manipulating a single baton or multiple batons. It is primarily performed with the accompaniment of music. Fundamental characteristics of the sport include the handling of the baton to create visual images, pictures, and patterns executed with dexterity both close in and around the body and the release of the baton into the air. The discipline requires the simultaneous blending of these fundamental characteristics, utilizing time and space to display both technical merit and artistic expression.

Baton twirling requires skillful coordination and extraordinary control of the human body. Additionally it requires a great amount of flexibility in order to properly execute baton, dance, and gymnastics elements. Choreography for baton twirling is designed to promote expression of the body through dance and movement to create a demonstration of strength, flexibility, physical fitness, beauty, aesthetics, and harmony in coordination with the manipulation of the baton.[1]

Hope I helped!

Hi, I am a freshman, and I am at a new school this year. My parents really want me to do something to get involved, meet new people, etc. Almost everybody at my school plays a sport, so I figured the best way to make friends is to play a sport too. I have always liked softball, and my best friend plays, so I have gone to a few of her games, and relatively know how the game works. The problem is that I haven’t ever played softball other than some times in gym class. I do have some experience in throwing a softball, and I am physically fit and can run, etc. Is it too late to start playing? What do I need to know before I start? Also, I know this probably varies depending on what school you attend, but how demanding are the practices? I really want to do a sport, but I also do honors classes, and I have to keep my grades up. I would appreciate just about any advice, and I won’t be offended if you tell me that trying out for softball isn’t my best bet. Thanks in advance for your time!!!!!!

My daughters play softball, and every year there are first-year players who make the freshman and/or JV teams at their high school – so there’s no reason you can’t do it if you start working at it and begin preparing now!

So what can you do?
Really work on your throwing, your catching, and your hitting. These are the three main skills that are needed in order to play the game. Don’t worry so much about learning "the rules." You have a basic understanding now, and you will learn by playing once you’re on the team.

Talk to your high school coach now to let them know you would like to play on their team – ask what you could do to have the best chances. Find out if there are any practices they’re holding before tryouts start that you could join in on. If not, try to find a more experienced player to work with. Or just go out with a parent, another friend, or a sibling. (Coaches want to help girls get better & learn, that’s why they coach! So they will probably be glad to give you some advice.)

1. Check out some good videos so that you know what you are trying to accomplish when you practice. Go to youtube and search "Mike Candrea" videos. He is the USA Olympic softball head coach (gold medals,) and also University of Arizona head coach (several national championships) and has several videos on throwing, fielding, and hitting that should help you understand the form to use.

2. Play catch A LOT. Concentrate on getting your throwing hand with the ball up higher than your head and behind you. As you begin to throw, your hand needs to be high and your elbow needs to be in an "L" shape – NOT in a "V" shape. This is one of the main things coaches look for because the L-shape bend in your elbow allows you to develop powerful throws. A low hand and V-shaped elbow = weak throws. Even if you can’t throw hard in the beginning, use the proper form and keep working at it to get stronger!

3. Work on your hitting – players who can hit decently have a MUCH better chance of making the team.
This is one of the main areas that good video instruction can help. Get a batting tee and use it to practice hitting line drives. Even top college players and pro baseball players use tees to work on their form, so don’t be shy about doing this. Also go to a batting cage as often as possible. If possible, it would be best to practice hitting with anyone who has taught hitting before, so ask the coach if they could help you or if they know of any good Little League coaches who might help. (Little League has teams/players up to 18 yrs old, not just little kids – and if you find a good little league softball coach they probably have a daughter you could meet and practice with, too!)

3. Also practice basic fielding – grounders and catching pop flies.

Most importantly, use your practice time now to get better and to start meeting friends too. If you don’t make the school team, I definitely suggest checking into your local Little League in January or February – they will probably have a "Juniors" team for girls age 13-14, and a "Seniors" team for 15-16 (and they have a good mix of experienced and new players that you could have a lot of fun with.)

Good Luck!!!

Right now I do field hockey in the fall, and swimming in the winter, and spring track in the spring. I wanna do the sports that will keep me in shape the most which combination is better
1) field hockey, swimming, track
3) cheerleading, winter track, softball
4) cross country, swimming, track
5) field hockey, winter track, spring track

Can you give me the other which would be the best out of these combination. I would like to keep my body in shape. Also I like very active sports that’s a workout and burns the most calories.
And do you know which burns more calories spring track middle distance or swimming???

I would say the 4th one, personally. The only thing I would change is make you’re spring sport softball because it really conditions your body and gets you into shape. Plus it is a fun, competitive sport to play in. I play softball and I love it, I look forward to it every spring!

I’m not sure which burns more calories but if I had to guess I’d say swimming..

By the way I am not a lesbian I was just wondering!

no it is not an lesbian sport. many lesbians are known to play it but there are way more straight girls/women who play softball than lesbians
